As the end of this season also marked the conclusion of several high school football careers, Tempe Prep’s seniors could now reflect about the effect the sport had on their lives.
Linebacker and offensive lineman Ryan Whalen, who battled through injury for much of this season, said that his participation in football “has given me some of the greatest experiences of my life. I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.”
Andrew Stough, who emerged as a two-way starter as a lineman, commented that “the relationships you build with your players, your teammates, [and] especially with my senior brothers… it’s hard to find in other sports.”
Hayden Harden, who played a key role at cornerback, felt that the impact of playing football “teaches you to be one with your team and do anything for them. It teaches you how to be disciplined, how to conduct your life in a way that is orderly. [Its influence] definitely goes beyond the football field.”
